“An unexamined life is not worth living.”
A quote I first heard in my first year of medical school, and in many ways, has gone on to define much of my life as a doctor. Exams upon exams. It almost feels never-ending.
And while I agree with Socrates that an unexamined life is not worth living, I am beginning to think that an over-examined life might also not be worth living.
When preparing for exams, I often feel like the proverbial Yakubu, feeling like I want to die, but I manage and stay alive, ready to go for the next level of the exams.
Anyway, today’s post is about something I came across while preparing for one of those many exams – the Triangle of Death.
Yes, there is actually a triangle of death on the human body. And guess where it is? The face.
Who would have thought that the very first part of the human body by which we socially identify each other would also contain something called a death triangle?
The triangle is formed by the nose and the upper lip. Skin infections in this region carry a rare but serious risk of spreading directly to the brain. This is because the veins that drain this area have no valves and communicate directly with veins inside the skull. As a result, infection can spread from this region to the brain.
Something as seemingly simple as an infected pimple or a nose piercing, in very rare cases, could lead to a life-threatening illness.
Now, this isn’t meant to scare anyone. With the abundance of antibiotic therapy available today, the chances of this happening are extremely slim.
But it is a reminder of something deeper: how small, seemingly insignificant actions can sometimes lead to devastating outcomes.
Remember, the outcome of your life is often the sum total of your decisions and indecisions.
Galatians 6:7 (NLT): “You will always harvest what you plant.”
