Apostle Emmanuel Iren once talked about what I will write today—The Main Character Syndrome. It’s a phenomenon where we unconsciously place ourselves at the center of biblical stories, imagining we are the Abraham, Moses, or Joseph of our time. We often forget that countless others lived during these eras, many of whom played vital, yet supporting roles in God’s grand plan. This is where the lesson lies: not everyone is meant to be the main character, but every role is essential.
Lot, for example, was not Abraham, but he was blessed immensely by his association with him (Genesis 13:5-6). Similarly, Aaron wasn’t Moses, but he was pivotal as Moses’ spokesperson (Exodus 4:14-16). Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not Daniel, but their faith glorified God in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:16-18). These examples show that being a supporting character in God’s story doesn’t make our contribution less meaningful. We may not always lead, but we are still part of God’s divine purpose.
This principle also applies to success and recognition. Not everyone will be the CEO or the visionary leader. Many will be like Aaron—essential, but in the background. Just as John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus (Matthew 3:3), supporting roles are vital to success. While these positions might not bring public recognition, they are no less crucial to the success of the bigger picture. Being part of a team, contributing to the success of another person, or even just being a reliable friend or family member can be equally fulfilling.
Fulfillment isn’t always about being in the spotlight; it’s about contributing meaningfully, even when your role is less visible.
Whether in spiritual life or secular work, not being the “main character” doesn’t diminish our worth. The Bible reminds us that every role, big or small, is crucial in the bigger story. We may be Aarons, Lots, or Shadrachs, but our part is significant in God’s plan and in life.
Have a lovely weekend ahead.
