Growing up, I remember my dad buying jigsaw puzzles for my siblings and me. They were these engaging little pieces of fun, challenging us to build a big picture from countless small parts. One thing I quickly noticed was how small and similar the pieces were. Because of their size and similarity, it was easy to lose one. And regardless of how many pieces made up the puzzle, the moment you lost a single piece, the picture could never be complete.

Each piece, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, was essential to reveal the whole image.

Life, in many ways, is a big jigsaw puzzle.

Take the story of Joseph, the young slave who rose to become the prime minister of Egypt. In all of his journey from prison to palace, it’s easy to miss one key part of his story. In Genesis 40:6-7, we see a pivotal moment: one morning, Joseph noticed his fellow prisoners looking unusually sad. Rather than ignoring them, he took the time to ask what was wrong, genuinely caring about their well-being.

Genesis 40:6-7

“When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, ‘Why do you look so sad today?'”

You might think, Of course they’re sad—they’re in prison. Most people would look away, assuming that misery is part of the environment. But Joseph chose to reach out, to show compassion, even in his own dark season. That simple act of caring led him to interpret their dreams—a small gesture that would later play a significant role in his path to freedom and ultimately his elevation to the palace. That moment was the piece that completed his life’s jigsaw puzzle.

Are you a caring person as well? Do you check on others, even when you’re in a difficult place? Sometimes, in our own “prisons”—those uncomfortable phases in life—it can be easy to turn inward, to focus only on our struggles. But showing care for others not only uplifts them; it might also open unexpected doors for us.

Remember, every piece of kindness is a part of the bigger picture. You never know which small act could be the missing piece that completes your own journey.

Have a great weekend ahead!

  1. Kindness and empathy is a rare gift any man can share with the world. Not using the current situation or environment as an excuse to avoid being kind or showing love and empathy is vital to completing your life’s puzzle. Very amazing read. Thanks Doc for sharing.
