In the medical profession, exams are almost a way of life.

From the day you enter medical school to the day you hang up your stethoscope, it seems you’re either recovering from one exam or preparing for the next.

When Socrates said, “An unexamined life is not worth living,” I sometimes wonder if he had medical doctors in mind.

One thing exams teach you—whether in medicine or any other field—is that preparation always leads you into new knowledge. You never walk away the same.

Just this week, while studying, I stumbled upon an interesting fact: the word salary comes from the Latin salarium, rooted in sal—meaning “salt.” Salt was so valuable in ancient times that it was used to pay wages.

In a completely different medical context, there’s a condition called Conn’s syndrome, where an organ in the body “steals” salt. My quirky way of remembering it is: Salt is valuable, and con-men steal valuable things. It’s a stretch, I know—but if it helps in the exam hall, I’ll take it.

But beyond medical facts and memory tricks, there’s a bigger life lesson here:
Life itself is a series of tests. Some are academic, some are personal, some are spiritual. And each one is meant to shape us, strengthen us, and prepare us for the next.

James 1:2–4 says:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Exams—whether on paper or in life—aren’t just about passing. They’re about becoming. And just like in medicine, you’ll find that the learning never truly stops.
