Building a Legacy:
From Castles to Character

This week, I celebrated my birthday, and what better way to mark the occasion than with a visit to Windsor Castle—somewhere I’ve long wanted to go. The timing felt perfect, and I’m so glad I took the opportunity to explore this historical landmark.

To say it was an amazing experience feels like an understatement. Walking through the halls where centuries of history have unfolded, I got a rare glimpse into the lives and legacy of the Royal Family. Initially built as a defensive fortress, Windsor Castle evolved into both a royal residence and ceremonial palace, and it was so massive and beautiful, that I was just blown away.

A highlight of my visit was St. George’s Chapel, built within the castle grounds. This chapel has held daily services for over 600 years—rain or shine, through wars and pandemics, it has remained a place of steadfast worship. Can you imagine that kind of unwavering commitment to faith? Taking a moment for a quiet prayer within those sacred walls was a deeply spiritual experience.

But perhaps the most thought-provoking part of the day was learning about King John of England. His reign was disastrous; he lost significant lands in France and was forced to sign the Magna Carta. He became so unpopular that no other monarch has borne his name since. In fact, King John is the only monarch in British history not to be followed by another with the same name.

To put it into perspective, there have been 8 Kings named Henry, 8 named Edward, 6 named George, 4 named William, and now the current King Charles is the third of his name. Yet, there has been only one King John.

King John’s reign ended 800 years ago, but the shadow of his name continues to shape the monarchy even to this day, a stark reminder of the lasting impact one person’s actions can have on their legacy—whether good or bad.

This made me reflect deeply on the question: What legacy am I leaving with my own name? What will people remember about me, and how will I be remembered for generations to come?

As the Bible says in Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.”

Our names are more than just identifiers; they are vessels that carry our reputation and the essence of who we are. Let’s fill them with goodness, grace, and a legacy worth remembering.

Have an amazing weekend!

  1. The greatest gift ever given to a man that completed his assignment by making profound contribution to generations unborn is a name through which all men can be saved.

Indeed a good name is something to cherish and live for.

Thanks for sharing Dr. Now, I have to go read about King John’s story.

  2. This is really deep.. it resonate with me .. as their leaders that if their names are mention it comes with pain and disgust and others happiness and joy for the impact they have made . Jésus name lives on and still making impact after thousands years

  3. Very insightful write-up. Will I be a name everyone wants to attach themselves to or one that would rather be forgotten. My actions today determines the legacies, memories and decisions of even 800 generations to come. Thanks for sharing Doc😊🙌
