October 1st every year, Nigerians celebrate Independence Day. Now, you already know no Nigerian celebration is complete without food. And if we’re being honest, when you think of Nigeria, you think of one dish before anything else: jollof rice.
Jollof rice is the best food in the world, and everyone deserves to taste it atleast once in their lifetime. It has categories. Yes, there’s party jollof and there’s homemade jollof. And in case you’re wondering, party jollof tastes better. Always.
But even within party jollof, we rank them. ‘Burial jollof’ is number one. Nobody really knows why, but it slaps differently. Then comes ‘wedding jollof’, solid contender. And finally, naming ceremony jollof which is ‘just there’ – good enough for visitors to wish the child well.
Now, before you start salivating, let me stop here. This post isn’t about jollof at all. Let’s get to the real gist.

An Open Door
Revelation 3 verse 8 says, “Behold I have set before you an open door which no man can shut.”
That’s God talking. And it’s a reassurance. What He opens, nobody can close. Not your enemies, not you, not even your village people. But here’s the interesting part. If the devil can’t shut the door, what does he do? He opens up many other doors. Suddenly you’re looking left, right, center, and thinking, which one should I enter? And boom, confusion.
This is why discernment is so important. And I don’t just mean knowing good from evil. That one is easy. The real test is knowing the difference between good and right.
Sometimes the problem isn’t even the devil. Sometimes the biggest enemy of the open door is you. Yes, you. When fear holds you back. When you overthink. When you procrastinate. Or when you simply decide not to take the step forward.
So here we are, fresh new month. God has already set an open door before you. The question is, are you too scared to walk through it? Or are you busy staring at too many options and getting stuck?
Maybe this is your reminder to pray for clarity. Ask God to help you see clearly and give you the courage to move.
Here’s wishing you an amazing October. And hey, if you’re eating party jollof this month, please invite me. We rice by lifting others.
Drop your thoughts in the comments, let’s talk.
