The day after Valentineās, I made one of the biggest decisions of my lifeāI asked the absolute love of my life to marry me.
She is an amazing woman in every sense, and I wanted to surprise her with a proposal she wouldnāt see coming. The planning had been in the works for about a month, and at multiple points, we had to re-strategize to make it all come together.
At first, I considered a garden proposal, but taking her to a random garden out of the blue would have raised suspicion. Then, I thought about a restaurant proposal, but weāre private people, and most decent spots were fully booked for Valentineās. Plus, finding a place that would be quiet enough for an intimate moment was nearly impossible.
At this point, I want to give a huge shoutout to the incredible committee of friends(Jemima, Sharon, Adesewa) and planners(@themikelannys) who helped make this possible.
We eventually found a studio that seemed like a great optionāuntil the owner started moving funny and quoting prices way above what was advertised. To make things worse, the decorator was different from the studio owner, and paying them separately led to an outrageous cost. Of course, my fiancĆ©e is priceless, but Iād rather focus on things of eternal value.
After going back and forth with logistics, we finally settled on proposing in her apartment. Initially, we ruled it out because she had a roommate (who, by some stroke of luck, traveled a week before). Also, getting access to her key was trickyābut we figured it out.
Then came the ring. I had no idea where to get one, so I started asking around. Thankfully, I already knew her ring size. One of my friends told me the ring should cost the equivalent of my monthly salaryāI laughed, thinking he was joking⦠until I realized he wasnāt. Iām patiently waiting for his own proposal so I can remind him of this statement. š Long story short, I found a stunning ring at a great price, ran it by her friends, and they loved it. I was sure she would too.
For the proposal setup, I didnāt have to do muchāthe event planner was on top of her game. My only request? Swapping the standard āWill you marry me?ā sign for a direct āMarry Meāābecause Iāve learned that being assertive is key. Donāt give room for multiple options. Just kidding. Haha.
The Big Day
I picked up my gorgeous princess for our āValentineāsā date, smoothly ānickedā her house key while she was unaware, and dropped it off at a prearranged location for the event planner. We had dinner at the amazing Enish restaurant, then on my way back to her place, I made a stop at my Airbnb to āpick up somethingā (which, unknown to her, was actually her house key I was retrieving from the planner).
Meanwhile, the photographerāwho happens to be a friendāand the event planner were already in position, waiting behind closed doors.
When we arrived and the door opened, she walked into a pathway beautifully decorated with rose petals. In that moment, it hit herāthe entire day had been leading up to this. She was pleasantly surprised, and seeing her reaction made it all worth it.
I eventually got down on one knee, did the needful, and popped the question with a funny line I coined from John 12:24. She said YESāand we rejoiced.
This isnāt just another Friday post; itās me chronicling one of the most special moments of my life.
Thank you for reading. ā¤ļø
