On an ordinary day—January 24, 1848—a young man was helping build a sawmill along the American River when he spotted shining flakes in the water. These flakes were tested and confirmed to be gold, sparking what became the California Gold Rush.

Within months, thousands of people migrated to San Francisco and beyond, hoping to strike it rich. But in the midst of this frenzy, only a few truly became millionaires.

One of them was Samuel Brannan, a businessman who never mined a single ounce of gold but made a fortune selling shovels and tools to miners at high markups. Another was Levi Strauss, who saw a need for durable work pants and created what we now know as jeans.

During a gold rush, sell shovels.

This same principle applies across different industries and eras. Take the Forex trading boom in Nigeria, for example. From my observation, the people who truly made consistent money weren’t necessarily the traders, but those selling knowledge—offering paid courses, running subscription-based trading groups, and monetizing insights.

Life is full of modern-day gold rushes. The key is to step back and ask: What do people need to succeed in this trend? Instead of chasing the gold, find the shovel that others will pay for.

“A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” – Proverbs 22:3 (NLT)

Opportunities are everywhere—don’t miss out on selling the shovels.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Great thoughts!

Ability to see what others are not seeing, rather than chasing after the obvious sets you apart for a world of fortune.

God give us seeing eyes, Amen 🙏
