Solomon Grundy: Gone Too Soon!

I remember while growing up in Nigeria, I learned a nursery rhyme titled “Solomon Grundy.” It goes like this:

Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday,
This is the end
Of Solomon Grundy.

I remember pondering whether Mr. Solomon lived for just one week, which would indeed be a very sad tale – a life with no steeze. Alternatively, perhaps his life was condensed into a sequence where major events seemed to occur on consecutive days.

What’s striking is that Solomon Grundy’s only notable accomplishment in the rhyme is his marriage. He didn’t choose his birth or christening, and he certainly wouldn’t have intentionally chosen to fall ill, die, or be buried.

Looking beyond the surface of the poem, it’s important to remember that life progresses in stages: we are born, and someday we will die, regardless of how composed your steeze is. What truly matters is what we do in the time between our birth and our death. Millions have lived and died on this planet, but very few have left a lasting legacy.

Don’t just go through life passively, merely following routines. Be intentional with your actions and choices. Strive to live a life of impact, making a positive difference in the lives of others.

The Bible reminds us of this in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Live in such a way that your actions inspire and uplift those around you, leaving a meaningful legacy that endures beyond your years.

Have an amazing weekend.
