Powering Up: From Tiger Gens to Mikano

In 2023, the International Renewable Energy Agency published a report stating that “Nigeria leads Africa as the highest importer of generators and is also one of the largest importers worldwide.”

One popular generator in Nigeria is nicknamed ‘Tiger Gen‘, derived from the name of the company that manufactures it. While the company offers a variety of models, when Nigerians mention ‘Tiger Gen’, they typically refer to a specific model. If you’re unfamiliar, here’s a picture for reference:

The popularity of the Tiger Gen can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, it is affordable; secondly, it’s portable; thirdly, it is fuel-efficient (in fact, users have discovered techniques to tilt the tank to extend fuel usage – IYKYK). However, the downside of the Tiger Gen is its low voltage output. It handles devices like mobile phones, laptops, and rechargeable lanterns well. But when you plug in heavy-duty appliances like irons or televisions, it begins to stutter, with noise levels increasing until it eventually shuts down. Some appliances may even cause it to switch off immediately upon plugging in.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have the ‘Mikano’ generator.

This generator is much larger in size and seamlessly powers heavy-duty gadgets without any hiccups. In fact, its efficiency is optimized when handling heavy loads. To cap it off, it’s worth noting that most Mikano generators are designed to operate silently, significantly reducing noise pollution compared to Tiger Gens.

However, this post isn’t about generators; it’s about YOU.

Your capacity can determine a lot about how you fulfill your destiny. Think of your capacity as the engine that drives your potential. Just like a generator, if your capacity is limited, you’ll struggle to power through challenges and heavy demands.

But here’s the thing: capacity isn’t fixed. You can expand it, just like upgrading from a basic Tiger Gen to a robust Mikano.

It requires intentional effort and continuous learning.

Ask yourself: Are you content being a Tiger Gen, managing only the basics, or are you striving to become a Mikano, capable of handling whatever comes your way with ease?

Even if you’re starting as a Tiger Gen, remember, you can always grow, evolve, and become more.
