Back in secondary school, biology was one of my favourite subjects, and I vividly recall a class we had on “relationships”. I remember the teacher giving various examples of parasitic, commensalistic, and symbiotic relationships. It was remarkably relatable.
Among these, the relationship between the shark and the remora fish stood out the most to me.
For those who need a quick recap: The remora fish attaches itself to the shark’s surface, getting free transportation, feeding on leftovers, and enjoying protection from the shark. In return, the shark benefits from the remora which keep its skin cleaned, parasites removed, and possibly provides emotional comfort and listens to the rants of the shark, lol.
Likewise, in the vast ocean of life, we often find ourselves navigating through challenges, facing uncertainties, and seeking allies along the way. Much like the remora fish, we sometimes encounter giants – formidable forces that seem daunting and insurmountable. Yet, it is in these moments of adversity that we must remember the power of collaboration.
One would think that the mighty shark will easily prey on the tiny, helpless remora fish but interestingly, out of over 500 species of sharks, only two “sometimes” feed on remora fishes. All other sharks naturally refrain from consuming remora fish, recognizing them as great partners.
In the ocean of life, if you are not a shark, be a remora.
Teamwork is everything.
Let us recognize that together, we are capable of achieving more than we ever could alone. So let’s find our own “sharks” in life and team up to tackle whatever comes our way.
Have a great week ahead.

I’m inspired by “if you’re not a shark, be a remora”.
