During my time in medical school, one of my Psychiatry Lecturers imparted a lasting lesson, stating, “Lack of insight is the first step to madness”. This profound statement has remained with me ever since.
In psychiatry, insight refers to an individual’s capacity to acknowledge their own illness. When this awareness is lacking, it is referred to as Anosognosia.
In cases of Anosognosia, the patient vehemently denies the existence of their illness and consequently rejects any form of treatment. To draw a parallel, imagine not recognizing your own uncleanliness; you would disregard any suggestion to take a bath.
In our present world, we see numerous examples of abnormalities that have been normalized/legalized due to a progressive loss of insight.
As Christians, the point of repentance is where we start gaining spiritual insight. This transformative moment, much like the prodigal son coming to his senses, involves the realization that Jesus Christ is the sole path to God. As we progress along this spiritual journey, our insight deepens.
As the term implies, “in-sight” leads us to develop an “inward sight” that provides us with divine illumination. However, until we fully embrace repentance, we are not different to individuals in denial of their ailment, unwilling to seek therapy.
Jesus answered him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless a person is born again [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified], he cannot [ever] see and experience the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 (Amplified Bible)
The above verse underscores the vital link between repentance and gaining insight into the things of God.
Have an amazing day.
