Embracing Self-Worth: Lessons from the Beloved

The phrase “the disciple whom Jesus loved” is mentioned six times in the Gospel of John, but nowhere else in the New Testament. It’s intriguing that the author of this Gospel, traditionally believed to be John himself, is the one who documents this unique expression. No other disciple confirms this claim, suggesting it was John’s personal perception of his relationship with Jesus.

John’s sense of being specially loved by Jesus is evident throughout his writings. He personalized the love he received, and this profound sense of love shaped his life and work. It’s no surprise that John penned one of the most well-known verses in the Bible: John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John’s deep spiritual connection also extended to his unique divine encounter that led to the writing of the Book of Revelation, where he was given visions of the distant future.

The Bible contains other instances of individuals acknowledging their qualities or experiences. For example, in Numbers 12:3, we read, “Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.” This was written by Moses himself.

Similarly, in John 20:3-4, John subtly notes his own speed, “So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.”

These examples illustrate the importance of recognizing and celebrating one’s own qualities and achievements.

There is something divine within everyone, and if the world refuses to acknowledge it, you should not do the same to yourself. Cherish and acknowledge your unique gifts, and others will eventually notice and appreciate them too.

In our secular lives, this principle is equally relevant. Whether in our careers, personal relationships, or creative endeavors, acknowledging our strengths and achievements is crucial. Self-recognition fosters confidence and resilience, helping us to navigate challenges and seize opportunities. By valuing our own contributions, we set a precedent for others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of positivity and mutual respect. So, don’t shy away from blowing your own trumpet—embrace your worth and let your light shine brightly for the world to see.
