Embracing Your Identity in a Secular World

In Matthew 5, we read the first Sermon Jesus ever preached, famously known as “The Beatitudes”. Among the profound teachings, Jesus uses metaphors to elucidate our identity.

Matthew 5:14 “Ye are the light of the world.”

Consider this fun fact: In the natural world, there are three prominent sources of light: the sun, the moon, and the stars.

Scientifically, the sun generates light by burning gases, while stars emit light on a smaller scale through the same process. Interestingly, the moon doesn’t generate light; it simply positions itself to reflect the light of the Sun.

Reflecting on this, we understand that as beings of light, we can embody the radiance of the sun as superstars, emit light as stars, or reflect light like the moon. Regardless of our role, what matters most is that we are illuminating our surroundings.

As Ecclesiastes 11:7 reminds us, “Light is sweet.”

In the second part of his sermon, Jesus declares, “Ye are the salt of the world.”

Matthew 5:13 “Ye are the salt of the world.”

Unlike light, salt operates subtly. Once visible, its purpose is defeated.

Salt may not always be seen, but its presence or absence is undeniable. In various situations, people may not overtly perceive you, but your influence as “salt” must be felt.

Now, how does this translate to our secular lives?

In secular contexts, we encounter diverse roles and opportunities to embody these metaphors. Like light, our actions, attitudes, and contributions can brighten the lives of those around us. Whether we take center stage like the sun, quietly shine in our roles like stars, or humbly support and reflect the brilliance of others like the moon, our impact is significant.

Similarly, the metaphor of salt reminds us of the importance of subtlety and influence. In our secular interactions, our presence should leave a positive impression, even if it’s not always conspicuous. Sometimes, it’s the subtle gestures, the quiet support, and the unassuming presence that make the most profound difference.

In essence, as we navigate our secular lives, let’s embrace our identity as light and salt. Let’s strive to illuminate our surroundings with positivity, kindness, and influence, whether in the spotlight or behind the scenes. For in doing so, we fulfill our purpose of making the world a brighter and more flavorful place for all.
